this will help MacPorts and Fink are package managers for OS X, like Homebrew. As the message says Homebrew doesn’t work well with these two, so you should either stay with MacPorts or Fink, or uninstall them and use Homebrew.
Outside of that, you can check Homebrew’s troubleshooting guide to learn how to fix common issues.

will be helpful for those in need to @jessenoller on Twitter I have an answer that fits my needs - you can compile lxml with static dependencies, hence avoiding messing with the libxml2 that ships with OS X. Here's what worked for me:
code :
cd /tmp
curl -O http://lxml.de/files/lxml-3.6.0.tgz
tar -xzvf lxml-3.6.0.tgz
cd lxml-3.6.0
python setup.py build --static-deps --libxml2-version=2.7.3 --libxslt-version=1.1.24
sudo python setup.py install

this one helps. In addition to upgrading my Xcode, it was necessary to install (again) Command Line tools. For a description of this process, see this answer.

hope this fix your issue Homebrew and Fink can coexist, but you need to be careful about not making a mess. In particular, since Homebrew usually builds from source, it could be a problem if you accidentally link Homebrew formulas^Wformulae against Fink-installed software, because the next upgrade might break the dependency. (That problem is probably much less likely now with Homebrew's superenv.) Basically, you need to do the job of the package manager yourself.
That said, Homebrew has an octave formula in the homebrew/science tap, so maybe you could just use that.
