Can Django's development server route mutliple sites? If yes, how?

this will help No, you can't.
The SITE_ID is cached in various places, so you can't change it at runtime. You need a separate process for each site, but you can't bind more than one process to a single port. Neither can the development server act as a reverse proxy for separate processes.

it should still fix some issue I am going to be making a series of about 5 sites. They need to all run on the same system. I am planning on making them all point to the same server, then depending on which domain is used to access it, different content/styles will be served. So its essentially going to be 5 or so different retail sites specializing in a particular product type. , Sounds pretty straight forward to me:
Just have a directory:
code :
/var/www/siteLibraries/foo.php
/var/www/site1/foo.php
/var/www/site2/foo.php

Does that help The easiest way to do this is with virtual hosting. Basically you run all the sites on one machine. The one machine has an Apache config that serves all the sites.
If the sites are more similar than different then just point all the sites to the one directory. The PHP files can detect what site they're serving. You can provide a different header and footer for each site to handle the look and feel. You can also restrict certain pages this way.

I wish this helpful for you In IIS you will need to create new web sites.
Configure each site to respond to either a different IP address or a different host header and point each site at the different folders.

To fix the issue you can do You can't background it directly through the python interface, but you can simply run one process per site. For example, in bash, something like
code :
for site in settings_{a,b,c,d}; do
    python manage.py runserver --settings $site &
done

Does that help I think you need to create your own AdminSite for custom purposes and keep default as it is. More about this you can find here: https://docs.djangoproject.com/en/1.6/ref/contrib/admin/#adminsite-objects and here https://docs.djangoproject.com/en/dev/ref/contrib/admin/#multiple-admin-sites-in-the-same-urlconf
Update:
code :
url(r'^$', wrap(self.old_index), name='old_index')
